I received an MMS (Multimedia Messaging Service) from my cousin the other day. He sent me a video from his phone showing his little boy taking his first steps. Oh, I could hardly contain myself watching little Justin hurriedly walking to the table for support. It's a great developmental milestone the 1st time your child walks, but the question that some parents have is "what can I do to prepare my child to walk"?
I know of some children who begin walking at a very early age, while others fail at reaching that stage of their life until months later. The average time for a child to take their first steps is between 12 to 14 months. Some children reach this goal in less time, and others can take up to 20 months. It really all depends on the child themselves. The best way to help your child is to simply encourage them. Every child develops differently than the other, so encouragement is the best solution. Another good tip is to use a walker. A walker strengthens their legs and gives them more mobility. Now, there are some people who say that you shouldn't use walkers, but only make this claim because of some injuries caused to toddlers falling down the stairs. Of course, as a parent, your first responsibility is the well being of your child. You should always monitor your child while in a walker, and make sure there aren't any objects in their path that can harm them.
When your child is ready, they will take a step toward that coveted milestone. When they are ready. That's the key. So give them all the encouragement and love that you can. Oh, and get the camcorder ready. It's a moment that will be priceless.
Sincerely,
The Caring Mom
